Artist Bio

Brooke Aruffo was raised in Southern California in the city of Claremont. Inspiration for her art is drawn from natural environments within California including the mountains, deserts, and seascapes. Within her abstract paintings she creates vibrant atmospheres with layers of translucent colors that allude to multiple dimensions. These dimensions occurring are reminiscent of the natural world, appearing as unworldly landscapes. The impressionistic-like characteristics of smeared paint, is balanced by crisp lines, and contrast of tones.

Artist Statement

I consider nature to be awe-inspiring. My recent experiences with nature (whether it be climbing outside, hikes, short walks, sitting by a lake, or simply taking a moment to appreciate a potted plant on a sidewalk), are the driving factors of my artwork when creating a new piece. My work strongly embodies the viewers connection to color, light, movement, and the overall feeling the painting or landscape can uniquely portray. Everyone’s experience in nature is unique to them and this is true for how beauty is perceived.

I believe beauty is found more so in the details than a wide natural landscape. Things in nature are not meticulously placed the same way art is often made. Leaves fall where they fall, rocks are moulded from billions of years movement, and lichen randomly grows on the bark of trees and stone. This is what I believe makes nature so glorious. I strive for my paintings to have this same unique beauty we often appreciate in nature. I am passionate and inspired by these small details found in nature and hope to intrigue viewers to look deeper in my work seeking these same attention and appreciating the small details along with the piece in its entirety

By using abstraction I hope to evoke the emotions of my viewers personal experiences and memories of nature. Colors fluctuate layer by layer, just as light can alter colors existing in the natural world. The appearance of light is created by the use of layering and transparency creating a pull leading to depth of a flat surface.  Different layers are applied with varying tools and techniques which providing a diversity of texture and appearance, just as textures vary in nature. Color choices are inspired by personal emotion, memory, and unexpectedly nature in its raw state.  I hope the mixture of texture, color, and layers will evoke a similar impact to a viewer as it has to someone’s curiosity while viewing natural landscapes causing them the desire to further explore and look at the details.
